Hand Choreography

From the Works for Violin & Movement, composed and performed by Andrew Maddick and Jason Jacobs, Hand Choreography explores the physical possibilities of violin performance, and what happens when the instrument is shared by 2 players.

Manipulation Through Visual Cues

Also from the Works for Violin & Movement, composed and performed by Andrew Maddick and Jason Jacobs, Manipulation Through Visual Cues is a part improvisation based on the concept of music generated through physical mimicry.

10 Notes

From the Works for Violin & Movement, composed and performed by Andrew Maddick and Jason Jacobs, 10 Notes evolved from our attempt to create a language of sound & movement.

Attention Grab

The motivation for the Attention Grab movements was to play with the viewer’s perspective. Visually one is drawn towards the movement in the background, despite the complexity of the aural stimulation in the foreground… and vice versa. Are you distracted?

Tap Suite

Tap Suite explores the relationship between the violin (as harmonic accompaniment) and tap shoe (as musical instrument). In Tap Lullaby the violin is intentionally quieter than the shoes, which now take a central role in the musical composition. Tap Jig melds two unlikely sounds to create a unique texture. Tap Ampersand plays with aural focus and interruption by exploring dynamic extremes.

Running Playing

The result of two men running and playing.

Feathers

The feathers catch the wind, collide, float, and follow an inevitable trajectory.

Pitch Shift

From Works for Violin & Drum Kit (2018), composed and performed by Andrew Maddick and Thomas Husmer, Pitch Shift evolved from an experiment with drum head tuning, and an exploration of the resulting texture.

Uspoleret

From Islands (2018), composed and performed by Andrew Maddick and Thomas Husmer, Uspoleret was inspired by the drawn out dusks of northern Europe’s Summertime. Danish for “unspoiled” the piece attempts to evoke a sense of calm and simplicity.

Harvest

From Works for Violin & Drum Kit (2018), Harvest is a duet in which Thomas and Andrew share the violin and drum kit as an innovative approach to interplay. At times the violin is simultaneously bowed, plucked and hammered, whilst foot percussion and drum kit are also in use.

Rolling Bird

This little number I wrote and recorded on the road in France. It’s for solo violin.

Argentina (from Small Giants)

A tiny taste of Argentina, taken from the short film Small Giants. I composed and recorded this whilst back home in Australia, 2011.

Görlitzer

After a couple of days in Berlin I was itching to write something…

Headn South – Jackie Marshall

Jackie Marshall’s wonderful song Headn South from her 2010 album Ladies’ Luck features my violin solo, cleverly manipulated by Ben Tolliday.

Chamber Music – Paolo Nutini

This 2010 bootleg video from London’s Royal Albert Hall features my violin solo in Paolo’s song Chamber Music.
